At We Are Eyes in Boca Raton, our optometrists perform comprehensive eye exams for patients from age 5 and up. You always receive at least 30 minutes with the eye doctor, and there is no rush.
A comprehensive eye exam involves an in-depth assessment of your visual acuity. During your exam, your optometrist will perform a series of tests to evaluate your eye health and determine if you need prescription eyeglasses. We utilize technologically advanced equipment to aid in the detection of ocular conditions including:
- Age-related macular degeneration
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Dry eye
- Computer vision syndrome (digital eye strain)
Visual Field Testing
A visual field test evaluates both central and peripheral vision and assesses the sensitivity of your vision.
The test is used to detect blind spots, which can indicate the presence of eye disease, including glaucoma, optic nerve damage, retinal damage, and diseases that may affect the visual pathways in the brain. A visual field test is not a routine part of a comprehensive eye exam, but our optometrists may recommend one, and we will gladly conduct the test if you request it.
Color Vision Test
Do you have difficulty distinguishing between different colors? A color vision test will determine whether you are able to differentiate particular colors or if you have color vision deficiency (color blindness).
Color vision deficiency may be genetic or may develop later in life as a result of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular edema, multiple sclerosis, and other disorders.
Our optometrists will use Ishihara plates to assess your ability to distinguish certain colors. These plates are dotted with a colorful pattern that forms numbers, which you will be asked to identify. A person with normal color vision will be able to identify the number, while those with color blindness will not see it or will see a different number.
Digital Retinal Photography
Using a high resolution digital camera system, the Boca Raton optometrists at We Are Eyes can take a photograph of your retina to detect eye and health conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma, high blood pressure, and retinal detachments.
Digital retinal photography will give your optometrist a highly detailed view of the health of your retina. The test is extremely useful in detecting retinal disorders as early as possible and preventing vision loss.
While retinal imaging is not automatically included in an eye exam (there is a separate charge for it), we highly recommend it, especially for patients at risk for retinal disease. It is a brief, completely painless test that provides an excellent baseline and year-to-year comparison of subtle changes in your retina.
